“RABBIT & STEEL is a co-op action roguelike that recreates the essence of high-level MMO raiding in a randomized, simplified, bunny-sized package.”
Rabbit and Steel released on May 9th, 2024 on Steam and seems to be Mino’s second developed game. It is an Action Roguelike game that is playable with up to four players and plays similarly to the Touhou game series but horizontal instead of vertical. Rabbit and Steel is a very fun game that has gotten many positive reviews since its release. The amazing music, challenging but rewarding gameplay and cute art style has made me love replaying the game when I’m with my friends or even alone and want something fun and quick to play.

The Steam page says that the game “recreates the essence of high-level MMO raiding” And after more than 25 hours of playing I can say that this is very true. Especially on the higher difficulties like hard and lunar, the game is very challenging. While the controls are pretty simple with only four action buttons, every item or upgrade obtained can completely change the way you play the game. With it being a roguelike, boss order, item drops and shop upgrades are all randomized making this game incredibly replayable. Another interesting aspect of the game is that all enemy and boss attack patterns are actually adjusted to the amount of players in the game. A boss single player can feel completely different to a boss with 2, 3 or 4 players, adding to the replayability. There are a ton of different classes to choose from each with very different styles of play making it fun to finish runs with every class. On harder difficulties, especially with more players, it can be difficult to read certain attacks but you get a defensive ability to help you dodge dangerous moves. Rabbit and ColdSteel’s simple but addictive gameplay makes the game incredibly fun to play every now and then.

Another major aspect of Rabbit and Steel is the soundtrack. Each area has its own unique out of battle and in battle song that represents the area and the characters in it. For example, one of the most popular songs, Emerald Lakeside, has a version without vocals out of battle, and a version with vocals during battle. The soundtrack is one of my favorite parts of the game and is another reason why I come back to this game so often.
The cute 2D artwork against the more 3D background is beautiful and the designs being more simple helps make it easier to see what is happening on the screen. Things like attack indicators and the written warnings also look great and make the game really easy and enjoyable to look at. The game also has a story, but sadly it’s locked to single player runs only. However, the story is very cute and I am excited to see it expanded upon in the soon to be released DLC.

Rabbit and Steel is a super cute and challenging roguelike that is incredibly fun to play with friends and is going to be even more replayable once the new DLC releases sometime this year. If you enjoy roguelikes, difficult games or are looking for a game to play with others, I highly recommend giving Rabbit and Steel a try.
