Radiant Historia : Perfect Chronology for the 3DS
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology was released on June 29, 2017 by Atlus and is one of my favorite 3DS RPGs of all time. It is a remake of the 2010 release on the DS with new story, art, voice acting and some new gameplay. The unique gameplay, the beautiful art style, and the amazing story and voice acting has made this one of the best RPGs on the 3DS that everyone should play.

As someone who is not a big fan of time travel in media, due to how many plot holes it creates or from poor handling of the idea, I can confirm that Radiant Historia makes excellent use of it and makes it fit perfectly with the story. You play as Stocke, and are tasked with stopping the desertification of the world, which leads to you hopping back and forth between two timelines to save the world. Limiting the story to only two major timelines makes the stories much stronger and much easier to understand as you’re constantly going back and forth. The interesting and complex world is one of the games strong suits, but the characters are another. Every character has fantastic voice actors and endearing personalities. My favorite characters have to be Stocke and Rosch because of their powerful friendship and how they develop over the story. The new story content added in Perfect Chronology was good as well, but nothing as amazing as the main story.

The mix of turn and grid based combat is also something I love in this game. Being able to push all enemies into one spot and get a big combo was always super satisfying. I’m also a big fan of being able to sacrifice your turns to get all your characters to act together, making a perfect balance of risk vs reward for every fight. The level design is also great, full of small but packed areas as you will be constantly revisiting locations throughout your journey. Every character has unique skills that make them all good in a party one way or another. A small issue I have however, is that because levels carry over between timelines, some characters (like Stocke) become much more powerful than the rest of your party creating a balancing issue. The remake did add an area for grinding however, and shops in that area to buy special powerful items for your journey.

Radiant Historia: PC doesn’t have a huge soundtrack, but all the songs are either great or incredible. With such a short list, every song is used many times, but to me this didn’t feel tiring or repetitive as each song fit perfectly with the environment or event around it. Finally, Radiant Historia has a super pretty pixel art style as well as beautiful character portraits making cutscenes a joy to go through.
Radiant Historia is an incredible game that I feel needs more attention from RPG fans. This game handles time travel excellently, has engaging battles and a deep and complex world. I highly recommend anyone looking for an RPG to play this next!
